As your child enters our reception year they will begin working on the Foundation curriculum. This focuses on personal, social and emotional development, mathematical development, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development and creative development. They will be assessed during their first year, at the end of which you will receive a foundation stage profile which will outline your child’s achievements. From Year 1 onwards they will be studying The National Curriculum. This gives a broad and balanced coverage of both core (literacy, numeracy and science) and the foundation subjects. In Elm Road School we devote more than the recommended time to both literacy and numeracy as we believe these are vital and important areas for our children. Children are all individuals and progress at different rates. Work is differentiated within the classroom so that all children can access the programmes of study for The National Curriculum.
The governors determine the sex and relationships education policy for the school (Legislation permits parents to withdraw their children from certain elements of sex education; further details are available on request). Religious education is provided in accordance with the agreed syllabus and is an integral part of a child’s moral education. Any parent may withdraw his/her child from religious worship and/or religious education in the school; it would be helpful if parents would put such a request in writing.
At times teachers set homework. For younger children it may be reading or word tins, with which parental help is invaluable. For older children it will also include some specific tasks. When homework is given we ask for parental support and would encourage you to provide a quiet working environment for your child.
Within the overall curriculum, we aim to provide a balanced programme of physical education for all children. About 8% of time is spent on PE, which can include gymnastics, dance, movement, swimming, athletics and a variety of team games.
From Year 3 onwards, children will attend swimming sessions at the Hudson Pool. Each class goes for a term and a half per year (15 sessions). Parents making a voluntary contribution have helped meet the cost of transport and a lifeguard. Without these contributions it is doubtful if the activity would take place.
